Hong Kong's pro-democracy leaders said they told a Chinese official in their first official contact Monday they will never compromise over the territory's political reforms amid fears that Beijing was trying to co-opt them. The two-hour meeting at the Chinese government's liaison office in Hong Kong involved the leadership of the opposition Democratic Party, which is viewed with suspicion by Beijing because it is harshly critical of China's authoritarian rule. It is also a fierce advocate of full democracy in this semiautonomous former British colony, where the leader is chosen by an 800-member pro-Beijing committee and the 60-member legislature is half-elected, half chosen by interest groups. The Democratic Party's first chairman, veteran activist Martin Lee, has been branded a "Chinese traitor" and "running dog for colonialists" by Chinese officials and their allies for briefing foreign officials about Hong Kong's democracy movement. Many of its legislators have been denied travel documents commonly issued to Hong Kongers that allow them to travel freely to the mainland. In a rare news conference by the liaison office after the meeting, Deputy Director Li Gang said the Chinese government decided to reach out to the Democratic Party because it did not take part in Hong Kong's latest democracy campaign, a move Beijing considered a challenge to its authority. Five legislators from other opposition parties — one from each of Hong Kong's five major electoral districts — resigned in January, triggering a byelection last week that they framed as a de facto referendum on political reform. "(The Democratic Party leaders) disagree with the position of the referendum movement. They didn't take part in the referendum. We support that, so we are willing to communicate with them," Li said. At the Democratic Party's news conference, Chairman Albert Ho was twice asked if he was worried about being co-opted by Beijing. He denied compromising, saying the three legislators repeatedly stated their opposition to limited political reform for the 2012 election backed by Beijing, which would expand the leadership selection committee to 1,200 people and the legislature to 70 members — but keep the chamber half-elected. "We said repeatedly at the conference table that we will vote against the package. It was very clear, no matter how honest and sincere the atmosphere was. That's the point we were most honest and sincere about," Ho said. "If you don't respond to our concerns, we will vote no." The Democrats want Beijing to promise genuine democracy in the 2017 and 2020 elections. The Chinese government ruled in December 2007 that Hong Kong could elect its leader in 2017 and its entire legislature in 2020, but democracy activists fear that Beijing will try to rig the vote.
